Jadranovo
Jadranovo is a small coastal town on Croatia’s northern Adriatic coast, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. It lies about 8 km from Crikvenica and 26 km from Rijeka, at roughly 45.2° N, 14.6° E. The town covers 7.6 square kilometers and sits at sea level. As of 2021, about 1,077 people live there.
Geography
Jadranovo sits on the sunny northern Adriatic coast and is divided into two parts by a small peninsula that contains the Bay of Lokvišće.
History
Humans have lived here since 6500–4000 BC. The Lokvišće archaeological site has ancient walls and many amphorae from the 3rd to 1st centuries BC, suggesting it was a small port for wine and olive oil. In the 8th–9th centuries Croats from Dalmatia settled in the area. The place now known as Jadranovo appeared as Sveti Jakov on a 1426 map. In the Middle Ages it was a coastal estate and port for Drivenik castle. On June 14, 1952, the name Sv. Jakov – Šiljevica was abolished, and in a 1954 referendum the name Jadranovo was chosen (other proposed names were Ribarevo, Lovorovo, Zidarevo, Radenovo). The inhabitants were called Jakovari.
Flood of 2008
At the end of November 2008, a strong sirocco caused a record wave near Bakar, flooding parts of Jadranovo and washing away beach sand; firefighters pumped water from basements and power lines were repaired.
Economy and tourism
Tourism is the main industry. There aren’t many large hotels; private rooms and apartments can house about 3,000 guests.
Culture and events
In summer there is a traditional fishermen’s festival, and Saint James’s Feast is celebrated on July 25 with live music.
Administration and population
Jadranovo has its own local committee. The 2011 census recorded 1,224 residents; the 2021 census recorded 1,077.
