Shire of Cambooya

The Shire of Cambooya was a local government area in the Darling Downs region of Queensland, Australia, just south of the city of Toowoomba. Its council was based in Greenmount and the shire covered about 638.5 square kilometres.

In 2006, about 5,652 people lived there, giving a population density of around 8.9 people per square kilometre. The shire existed from 1914 until 2008, when it joined with Toowoomba and several nearby shires to form the Toowoomba Region.

The main local industries were dairying, beef cattle, pig production, horse breeding, grain growing and vegetables. The northern part of the shire included rural-residential areas such as Vale View and Hodgson Vale, which are within about 12 kilometres of Toowoomba and act as commuter areas for the city.

Cambooya was created by separating from the Shire of Clifton. It also took parts from Tarampa Shire in 1915 and from Drayton in 1949. The shire was divided into four divisions, each electing two councillors, with a separately elected mayor.

On 15 March 2008, under state local government reform, the Shire of Cambooya merged with the City of Toowoomba and the Shires of Clifton, Jondaryan, Millmerran, Pittsworth and Rosalie to form the Toowoomba Region.
