Sherlock Holmes (2010 film)
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes is a 2010 British-American steampunk mystery movie made by The Asylum. It stars Ben Syder as Sherlock Holmes and Gareth David-Lloyd as Dr. John Watson. The film tells an original story: in a frame tale, an elderly Watson recalls an unrecorded case from 1882 where Holmes and Watson face a string of monster attacks around London.
A giant octopus sinks a royal ship, a Megalosaurus roams Whitechapel, and a masked mechanical man called Spring-Heeled Jack is revealed to be Holmes’s crippled brother, Thorpe, who uses a mechanical suit. Thorpe and his accomplice Inesidora Ivory plan to destroy London, kill Queen Victoria, and force Lestrade to take the blame. They use artificial monsters to steal resources and advance their scheme, including a dragon that fires flames.
Holmes and Watson uncover the plot and stop Ivory and Thorpe. Ivory is defeated, Thorpe is shot by Holmes, and Lestrade is cleared of blame. Holmes and Watson vow to keep the events secret. In the present, Watson dies peacefully.
The film was released direct-to-DVD on January 26, 2010 as a low-budget mockbuster aimed at the popularity of a bigger Sherlock Holmes movie. It was filmed in Wales and later released in the UK on DVD in 2014. Critics were mixed to negative, with some finding it silly but entertaining and others criticizing the acting and plot.
