Joseph Bell (engineer)
Joseph Bell (engineer)
Joseph Bell (12 May 1861 – 15 April 1912) was a British engineer who became chief engineer for two White Star Line ships: the Olympic and later the Titanic. He died when the Titanic sank.
Early life
Bell was the oldest son of John Bell Sr. and Margaret Watson. He grew up in Farlam, Cumberland, with siblings Jane, Richard and John Jr. His mother died after his birth. He went to a village private school and later Carlisle’s William Harrison Academy. He trained as an engine fitter at Robert Stephenson and Company in Newcastle.
White Star Line career
In 1885 Bell joined the White Star Line and worked on ships trading with New Zealand and the United States. He was promoted to chief mechanical engineer in 1891. He married Maud Bates in 1893, and they had four children: Frances (Frank), Marjorie, Eileen, and Ralph. Bell’s work took him to Belfast, where he oversaw engines for new liners and helped install powerplants on ships like Laurentic and Megantic. He played a key role during the construction and early service of the Olympic and Titanic engines.
RMS Titanic
Bell transferred to the Titanic as Chief Engineer and officially signed on the morning of 2 April 1912. On 10 April he ordered Leading Fireman Frederick “Fred” Barrett to tackle a coal bunker fire to keep the pumps running. While the ship rested in Queenstown, White Star’s chairman Ismay discussed the ship’s performance with him. On the night of 14–15 April, after the iceberg collision, Bell and the engine crew worked to keep the pumps and lights going as long as possible. The Titanic sank in the early hours of 15 April; Bell was among the about 1,500 who died, and his body was never recovered.
Legacy
Bell’s wife Maud and his sister-in-law inherited his farm at Farlam, which they later sold because the family did not want to live there. He is commemorated in the parish church at Waterlooo and in the Farlam cemetery. The Titanic Engineers’ Memorial in Southampton also honors him and the ship’s other engineers.
Portrayals
Bell has been depicted in several Titanic films and TV productions, including Titanic (1953), A Night to Remember (1958), S.O.S. Titanic (1979), and the 1997 Titanic film, among others.
