Shelter Cymru
Shelter Cymru is a charity in Wales that helps with housing and homelessness. They believe a decent, secure home is a basic right and important for healthy communities. They offer independent advice, advocacy and legal help to anyone with housing problems. In 2012, their advisers helped about 17,000 people across Wales and averted homelessness in about 90% of threatened cases.
Shelter Cymru also works to improve housing laws and services through research, policy work and campaigning. Their education service aims to prevent homelessness by teaching young people and providing resources for schools and youth workers.
The charity is independent and focused on Wales, though it works with Shelter, its sister charity in England and Scotland. The President is Bryn Terfel; Vice-Presidents include Cerys Matthews and Rebecca Evans; the Director is John Puzey.
In 2012, a Shelter Cymru report for the Welsh government found that homeless people were often treated with a lack of respect, prompting a pledge of £7 million to help them. In 2013, Shelter Cymru said homelessness in Wales could rise, and the Welsh government said it would work with them to tackle the issue.
