Shared Belief
Shared Belief (February 15, 2011 – December 3, 2015) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who also raced as a gelding. He was a dark bay or brown horse with a white star, bred in Kentucky by Pam and Martin Wygod. His sire was Candy Ride and his dam was Common Hope. He was owned by a partnership that included Solis/Litt Bloodstock, Jungle Racing, KMN Racing, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, and Dr. George Todaro. He was trained by Jedd Josephson early in his career and later by Hollendorfer, and he raced 12 times, winning 10, with one race not finishing and earnings of about $2.93 million.
Two-year-old season
- Shared Belief was undefeated in three starts as a two-year-old, winning the Hollywood Prevue Stakes and the Los Alamitos Futurity.
- He was named the American Champion Two-Year-Old Male Horse at the Eclipse Awards in January 2014.
Three-year-old season
- An ankle and foot issue kept him from racing in the 2014 Kentucky Derby.
- He returned later that year to win four stakes races: the Los Alamitos Derby, the Pacific Classic, the Awesome Again Stakes, and the Malibu Stakes.
- He finished fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Four-year-old season
- In 2015 he defeated California Chrome in the San Antonio Stakes.
- He then won the Santa Anita Handicap, carrying top weight.
- He injured his hip in the Charles Town Classic in April and began a period of rehabilitation.
Final years and legacy
- After recovery, Shared Belief showed promise but died on December 3, 2015, from complications of colic following emergency surgery.
- The El Cajon Stakes at Del Mar was renamed in his honor in 2016.
- His career highlight included powerful wins against older horses and a high level of versatility across important Grade I races. The Shared Belief Stakes is named in his memory.
