Shankarnagar is a town in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh. It is known for its silica mines. The Raja of Shankargarh historically held mining rights over 46 villages, covering about 150 square kilometers, and granted these rights to contractors who hire local workers to extract minerals.

As per the 2011 Census, Shankargarh had a population of 17,785 (9,343 males and 8,442 females). Children aged 0–6 years numbered 2,712. There were 11,442 literates, making the overall literacy rate 64.3% (male literacy 69.8%, female literacy 58.3%). The effective literacy rate for people aged 7 and above was 75.9% (male 83.2%, female 68.0%). Scheduled Castes numbered 4,087 and Scheduled Tribes 107. There were 3,095 households.

Earlier, the 2001 Census recorded Shankargarh’s population at 13,116, with 53% males and 47% females. The overall literacy rate was 61% (male 70%, female 52%), and 17% of the population was under 6 years of age.
