Shane Barrett
Shane Barrett (born 31 January 2001) is an Irish hurler from Blarney, County Cork. He plays as a centre-forward for the Cork senior hurling team and at club level for Blarney.
Early life and education
Barrett was born in Blarney and raised in Rathpeacon. He started playing hurling at Christian Brothers College in Cork, moving through the school’s age groups and then to the senior team in 2017. He later studied at University College Cork, where he joined the fresher hurling team and later was part of UCC’s Fitzgibbon Cup panel.
Club career
Barrett began his club hurling with Blarney, winning the Cork Premier 2 MHC title in 2016. In 2018, Blarney lost the Cork Premier 1 MHC final to Midleton. He made his Cork Senior Championship debut with Blarney in 2019, in a win over Ballinhassig. In 2020, he helped Blarney win the Cork Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship, scoring in the final against Castlelyons. In 2023 he was Blarney’s top scorer with 1-69 as they reached the Cork SAHC final, only to lose to Bride Rovers in a replay.
Inter-county career
Barrett first played for Cork at under-17 level in 2017, winning the Munster U17HC and the All-Ireland U17HC final against Dublin. He captained the Cork minor team before joining the Cork under-20 team in 2020, winning both the Munster and All-Ireland Under-20 Hurling Championships that year. He joined the Cork senior squad in 2021, making his National League and Munster Championship debuts. He came on as a substitute in Cork’s 2021 All-Ireland final defeat to Limerick. He started at centre-forward in Cork’s 2024 All-Ireland final, a closely contested extra-time defeat to Clare. Barrett earned an All-Star award for the 2024 season.
