Sergius V of Naples

Sergius V, the son of John V, ruled as Duke of Naples from 1042 to 1082. In the summer of 1074, fighting broke out between Richard I of Capua and Robert Guiscard. Sergius sided with Guiscard and used Naples as a base to supply his troops. This put him at odds with Aversa and Capua, while Richard I had the support of the Pope. Soon Sergius began talks with Pope Gregory VII after he had narrowly escaped destruction in June. These talks ran alongside negotiations between the two Norman princes, mediated by the abbey of Montecassino.
