Sanquhar Declaration

The Sanquhar Declaration was a speech read in 1680 in the public square of Sanquhar, Scotland. Michael Cameron spoke it in the presence of his brother, Covenanter leader Richard Cameron, with about twenty armed men nearby. It rejected loyalty to King Charles II and to the government of Scotland, claiming to defend the true Protestant and Presbyterian faith and opposing government interference in church matters. Seen as a symbolic act of resistance, it was effectively a declaration of war against the authorities and was one of the early events that helped lead to the Glorious Revolution and the end of the Stuart reign.
