Sands Street is a street in Kennedy Town on Hong Kong Island. It connects Kennedy Town New Praya and Shing Sai Road in the north, and it passes through Kennedy Town Praya, Catchick Street and Belcher’s Street. On the south side, a pedestrian path continues uphill to Tai Pak Terrace, Hee Wong Terrace, Ching Lin Terrace, To Li Terrace and an alley leading to Li Bo Lung Path among the Sai Wan Seven Terraces. At the bottom of the slope, the road meets Rock Hill Street, forming a one-way lane.

Naming: Sands Street is named after Captain George Underhill Sands. In 1867 he set up a dock in Sai Wan, in the area now bordered by the Kennedy Town waterfront, Holland Street, Tai Pak Terrace and Sands Street. The street used to be known as Captain Sand’s Slip.

West Island Line: In the MTRWest Island Line plan of 2005, Kennedy Town Station was proposed to have two exits on Sands Street. The final plan in 2006 canceled these two exits.

Hillside Escalator Links and Elevator Systems (HEL): There is a long, uneven staircase at the intersection of Sands Street and Rock Hill Street that can be slippery when it rains, making it hard for residents to get around. Local parties advocated for escalators and an elevator on Sands Street. In 2007, the MTR proposed an elevator on Rock Hill Street to connect to Sands Street and escalators on Sands Street. The HEL was completed and opened on December 28, 2012, greatly improving accessibility and guiding passenger flow. There have been suggestions to build a further HEL linking Sands Street with Ching Lin Terrace.

Others: The area’s high position above the sea and its preserved old-style buildings have made it a filming location for movies and TV shows, including Beyond’s The Black Wall soundtrack and the ATV series Chameleon.
