Sambirano woolly lemur
Sambirano woolly lemur (Avahi unicolor)
The Sambirano woolly lemur is a critically endangered primate found in western Madagascar, likely limited to the Sambirano region on the Ampasindava peninsula. It belongs to the woolly lemur family (Indriidae) and has only a few known specimens, so much about its behavior and exact range remains unknown. It can be distinguished from similar species by its pale face without a white facial outline or dark eye rings. Its fur is light gray-beige, and its tail is gray-brown to reddish-brown. Its suspected range stretches from the Sambirano River in the north to the Andranomalaza or Maevarano River in the south. The main threat is deforestation, and the level of hunting impact is not well understood. It is listed on CITES Appendix I, highlighting the need for more research and better protected areas to conserve it.
