Salvatore Petruolo
Salvatore Petruolo (January 4, 1857 – 1946) was an Italian painter from Catanzaro who died in Naples. He studied with Gabriele Smargiassi at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples. He is known for coastal landscapes near Naples and some rare landscapes of Calabria.
From 1875 to 1898 his paintings followed the School of Posillipo style, with influences from Edoardo Dalbono. After 1898 his style became more personal and had symbolist touches.
Petruolo was popular with English and American visitors to Naples. His studio welcomed many notable guests, including Empress Frederick, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Prince of Battenberg, and Princess Louise, sister of King Edward VII.
In 1889 he stayed in Malta for three months with the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. He also made a painting trip to Spain (Granada, Seville, Cordoba, Zaragoza) and showed the works from this trip at an exhibition in Clarence House in London.
