2014 West Coast Eagles season
The 2014 West Coast Eagles season was the club’s 28th in the AFL and the first with a reserves link to East Perth in the WAFL. After finishing 13th in 2013, the Eagles aimed higher but finished 9th (11 wins, 11 losses) and missed the finals.
New coach and leadership
- John Worsfold had stepped down after 12 seasons; Adam Simpson took over as head coach.
- Darren Glass started as captain, but retired in round 12. Five players served as acting co-captains for the rest of the year: Shannon Hurn, Josh Kennedy, Eric Mackenzie, Matt Priddis, and Scott Selwood.
Season performance and figures
- Home ground: Patersons Stadium. Average attendance: 34,198; high of 40,476 against Fremantle (round 7); low of 25,076 against Sydney (round 16).
- Leading goalkicker: Josh Kennedy with 61 goals.
- Best and fairest: Eric Mackenzie (John Worsfold Medal).
- Brownlow Medal (league best and fairest): Matt Priddis won the award for the season.
- All-Australian: No West Coast players were selected.
- Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award: Beau Waters.
Pre-season and player movements
- West Coast were undefeated in the NAB Challenge, then beat the Western Bulldogs in their season opener on March 23.
- Retirements during/after the season included Darren Glass, Brad Dick, Andrew Embley, Ashton Hams, Daniel Kerr, Mark Nicoski, and Adam Selwood.
- Key additions included Xavier Ellis (one-year contract from Hawthorn) and, mid-season, Corey Adamson joined the rookie list under a special rule.
- In the 2014 Rookie Draft, Murray Newman was delisted and then redrafted by the club.
Overall, 2014 was a year of transition and solid individual achievements for West Coast, but the team did not reach the finals.
