Early life and education
Sally Elizabeth Phillips grew up around the world—her father Tim Phillips was an executive with British Airways and later chairman of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, so her family moved across the Far East, the Middle East, Italy and Australia. She attended Wycombe Abbey School in the UK, where she completed her O-Levels and A-Levels. She studied Italian and linguistics at New College, Oxford, where she joined the Oxford Revue, often playing male parts and meeting collaborators who would become famous comedians. She also wrote and performed a one-woman show inspired by a true story and took part in the Oxford Revue’s productions, eventually earning a first-class honours degree. She briefly considered a PhD on Spaghetti Westerns but chose a career in drama instead.

Sally Phillips was married to Andrew Bermejo from 2003 to 2017, and they have three sons, one of whom has Down syndrome. She has spoken publicly about her health scare in 2002, when salmonellosis led to a brain infection and months of recovery. A practicing Christian, she is a patron of Blue Apple Theatre, an organization in Hampshire that creates performance work for adults with learning disabilities. Her experiences have also driven a documentary exploring the ethics of medical screening.
