Jews from Morocco began arriving in Madeira in 1819 and worked in cloth and wine trades. The Abudarham family helped run the Madeira wine business from the early 1860s and were active in the Jewish community. During World War II, about 200 Jews from Gibraltar were evacuated to Madeira, which helped grow the community; some of these evacuees are buried here. The Abudarham family is also linked to the Abudarham Synagogue in Gibraltar.
