Sailor Beware! (1956 film)
Sailor Beware! is a 1956 British comedy film directed by Gordon Parry. Based on the stage hit by Philip King and Falkland Cary, it stars Peggy Mount, Shirley Eaton, and Ronald Lewis, with Gordon Jackson, Joy Webster, Esma Cannon, and Cyril Smith in supporting roles. It marks Michael Caine’s film debut in a small, uncredited part, and Paul Eddington’s film debut (also uncredited).
Plot
Royal Navy sailor Albert Tufnell is about to marry Shirley Hornett. He spends the day with Shirley’s family and begins to worry that married life may mirror the unhappy home life he has seen: a domineering mother, Emma, and a meek father, Henry, along with a bossy aunt Edie. Shirley’s cousin Daphne and her friend Carnoustie Bligh also spark interest. Emma resists the idea of where the couple will live, while Albert and Shirley try to manage the chaos. On the wedding day, Albert hesitates, but a private talk with the Reverend reveals that the examples from Shirley’s family have unsettled him. Henry speaks up about Emma’s influence, and Emma breaks down, deciding to change. Albert and Shirley marry, though Emma’s old habits linger.
