Sailfin corydoras (Scleromystax macropterus)

The sailfin corydoras, also called bigfin or largefin corydoras, is a subtropical freshwater fish in the Corydoradinae subfamily of the Callichthyidae family. Its scientific name is Scleromystax macropterus. It has synonyms Corydoras macropterus (Regan, 1913) and Corydoras bertoni (Eigenmann, 1942). The species is currently listed as Endangered.

Habitat and range
It lives in coastal rivers in South America, from São Paulo to Santa Catarina in Brazil, and in some upper Paraná River tributaries. It was first described in 1913 by C. Tate Regan.

Size
The fish grows up to about 3.4 inches (8.7 cm) long.

Environment
It prefers subtropical freshwater with a pH of 6.0–8.0, water hardness of 2–25 dGH, and a temperature of 64–70°F (18–21°C).

Diet
Its foods include worms, benthic crustaceans, insects, and plant matter.

Reproduction
Sailfin corydoras lay eggs in dense vegetation, and adults do not guard the eggs.

Importance
It is kept in the aquarium trade.
