S. Rm. Muthiah Chettiar
Sathappa Ramanatha Muthiah Chettiar (1840–1900) was an Indian merchant, banker and philanthropist from Kanadukukathan in the Madras Presidency. Born to Ramanathan Chettiar, a leader of the Nagarathar community, he had little formal schooling but joined the family banking business. He expanded his operations to Ceylon, Burma and Malaya, amassing a large fortune. He is remembered for his philanthropy, including funding the renovation of the Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram, supporting the Arudra Dharsanam choultry there, and building the Nagarathar choultry near the Dasaswamedha Ghat in Varanasi. He passed away around 1900, leaving behind the S. Rm. M. family.
