Constantin A. Kretzulescu
Constantin A. Kretzulescu (22 May 1809 – 21 March 1884) was a Romanian academic, politician, and honorary member of the Romanian Academy from 1871. Born in Bucharest, he studied at a Greek school and joined the army in 1831, reaching the rank of major by 1840. He then served as prefect of Brăila County and later as a prosecutor at the High Court. In 1842 he left the army to travel to France, England and Italy to study literature, philosophy and history.
Returning to Romania, he played a political role in 1857 as president of the Wallachian committee that organized elections for a special assembly. He founded the Concordia newspaper, which later passed to C. A. Rosetti. In 1867, Kretzulescu served as Prime Minister (President of the Council of Ministers) and Interior Minister from March to August of that year. He was the brother of Nicolae Kretzulescu.
