Leo Mogus
Leo John Mogus (April 13, 1921 – May 31, 1971) was an American professional basketball player from Ohio. He attended Scienceville High School in Youngstown and played college basketball at Youngstown State University from 1939 to 1943, where he scored about 1,400 points and also played football.
Mogus was 6 feet 4 inches tall and played as a power forward and center. He wore jersey numbers 7, 22, 14, 29, 44, and 18 during his career. After college, he played in the Basketball Association of America, which later became the NBA, for several teams: Cleveland Rebels, Toronto Huskies, Baltimore Bullets, Fort Wayne Pistons, Indianapolis Jets, and Philadelphia Warriors. He also spent time with the Youngstown Cubs.
He averaged 8.5 points per game in the BAA/NBA. In the 1946–47 season he ranked ninth in the league in total points (753) and ninth in points per game (13.0), and also ranked seventh in total assists (84) and ninth in assists per game (1.4).
Mogus is the only player from Youngstown State University to play in the NBA, and he was inducted into the YSU Hall of Fame in 1985. He passed away in Los Angeles, California, in 1971 at age 50.
