Ruben Blommaert
Ruben Blommaert (born 5 March 1992) is a retired figure skater who was born in Belgium and later represented Germany. He started skating in 1998 and has a twin brother named Sander.
Early career in Belgium
- He competed for Belgium in single skating until 2010, taking part in European Championships (finishing 25th in 2008 and 2009) and the Junior World Championships (finishing 38th in 2008 and 28th in 2009).
- He became a German citizen on 1 July 2014, while keeping Belgian citizenship.
Switch to Germany and pair skating
- In 2011, Blommaert teamed up with Annabelle Prölß. They won the 2013 German national title and the 2013 Cup of Nice, and also claimed junior national titles in 2012.
- In 2015, he began skating with Mari Vartmann. They won the 2015 Cup of Nice and earned several ISU Challenger Series medals in 2016, including bronze at the Nebelhorn Trophy and bronze at the Finlandia Trophy. The partnership ended in January 2017.
- Blommaert then joined Annika Hocke (2017–2019). The pair competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics and won silver at the 2017 Minsk-Arena Ice Star and at the 2017 International Cup of Nice before separating in 2019.
- In 2019–2020, he briefly skated with Elena Pavlova, with training split between Russia and Germany due to visa issues; the partnership lasted one season.
- From 2021 to 2023, his partner was Alisa Efimova. They placed second at the 2022 German Championships and earned international milestones, including:
- Second place at the 2022 Nebelhorn Trophy
- Silver at the 2022 Grand Prix of Espoo
- Fifth at the 2022 CS Golden Spin of Zagreb
- They withdrew from Skate Canada International after a fall in the short program and later competed at the 2022 Espoo Grand Prix, finishing second
- Fifth at the 2023 European Championships in Espoo
- Tenth at the 2023 World Championships in Saitama
Retirement
- Blommaert retired from competitive figure skating in 2023, citing lack of funding from the German Skating Union as a major reason.
