Royal Land Company of Virginia
The Royal Land Company of Virginia was created in Rockingham County on March 27, 1876, to buy and develop mineral lands, mines, and to manufacture products from them. In 1876 it purchased many coal, iron, other mineral, and timber lands in Virginia and West Virginia, totaling about 154,998 acres (62,725 hectares). The company focused on coal (bituminous and anthracite), iron ores (hematite, specular, and magnetic), copper, asbestos, marl, manganese, building stones, and other minerals, as well as agricultural, mechanical, timber, and related resources along its railways. It operated several railroads.
