Sassafras Point Light

Sassafras Point Light was a small lighthouse in the Providence River near Sassafras Point, Providence, Rhode Island. It stood on a granite pier with a short wooden hexagonal pyramidal tower, 14 feet tall, and a focal height of 25 feet. The light used a sixth-order Fresnel lens and produced a fixed red light.

The light first shone in 1872 and was deactivated in 1912. It was unmanned; keepers lived in town and traveled by boat to the light. Although funds were approved in 1874 to build a keeper’s dwelling, the service could not acquire a suitable property for a house.

From the start, Sassafras Point Light was paired with Fuller Rock Light—the two lights were approved in the same bill, built to the same design, and tended by the same keepers.

The Sassafras Point Light marked an obstruction where Sassafras Point jutted into the Providence River. It was removed in 1912 as part of a channel-widening project. Coordinates: 41.8004306°N, 71.3920583°W.
