Rowland Williams (priest)
Rowland Williams was a Welsh Anglican priest and writer. He was born in Mallwyd, Merionethshire, and baptised on 27 March 1779. He studied at Ruthin School and Jesus College, Oxford (1798–1802), earning a BA in 1802 and an MA in 1805. He was ordained in 1802 by John Randolph, Bishop of Oxford. He worked as an usher at Friars School, Bangor, and as curate of Llandygai. He later served as vicar in Cilcain, Halkyn, Meifod, and from 1836 until his death at Ysceifiog, Flintshire. He loved Welsh literature and became an expert on the Welsh language. He helped revise the Welsh Book of Common Prayer and wrote sermons for church magazines. He was married and had three sons (one of whom was the theologian Rowland Williams) and five daughters. He died on 28 December 1854. There is a memorial window to him in St Asaph Cathedral at the west end.
