Rogue City
Rogue City, also known as Bronx in French, is a 2020 French crime film written and directed by Olivier Marchal. It stars Lannick Gautry, Stanislas Merhar, David Belle, and Kaaris. The movie was released on Netflix on October 30, 2020. Set in Marseille, it follows an anti-gang police unit as they investigate a mass shooting at a nightclub while dealing with internal affairs scrutiny, tension with a rival narcotics unit, and threats from dangerous gang leaders.
Plot (easy to follow):
- A Corsican drug gang called the Bastiani carries out a mass shooting at an open-air bar. One attacker hides among the victims.
- A corrupt detective, Costa, manipulates events to frame others.
- Captain Richard Vronski leads the anti-gang unit and uses an unsanctioned ambush with stolen gang guns to strike the Bastiani during a major cocaine shipment near Marseille.
- Nadal, the Bastiani’s rival gang leader, tries to hijack the shipment with Costa’s help.
- An undercover narcotics agent is killed in a chaotic four-way shootout.
- After a series of betrayals, Vronski makes a deal to eliminate Nadal’s gang but the case unravels into more killings and corruption.
- In the end, Vronski and several teammates are killed or driven out, and the head of the Narcotics Bureau is revealed to be behind a larger plot to take over both gangs.
Production and release:
- The film is produced by Gaumont, Umedia, and uFund. It runs 116 minutes and is in French.
- It was shot in the south of France and released on Netflix on October 30, 2020. The budget was about $13 million.
Reception:
- Critics gave mixed reviews. Some noted its radical, nihilistic view of pervasive corruption, while others found the film difficult to follow and overly bleak.
