The 2001 season was the Sacramento Monarchs’ fifth season in the WNBA. Coach Sonny Allen began the year but resigned on June 26, and Maura McHugh finished the season as head coach. The Monarchs finished with a 20-12 record, good for second place in the Western Conference. They played their home games at ARCO Arena, averaging about 8,350 fans per game. In the playoffs, Sacramento won their first series but then fell to the Los Angeles Sparks in the Western Conference Finals, 2-1; the Sparks went on to win the championship. Television coverage was on KMAX.
