Roberts Park, Saltaire
Roberts Park is a 14-acre public urban park in Saltaire, near Bradford, West Yorkshire. It sits north of the River Aire, with Higher Coach Road to the north. A footbridge connects Saltaire to the park. The park is part of the Saltaire World Heritage Site, is Grade II listed, and has won the Green Flag Award. It welcomes up to about 3,000 visitors a day and is open all year.
The park was designed by William Gay for Sir Titus Salt and opened on 25 July 1871. It was originally called Saltaire Park and was also known as The People’s Park. The River Aire was widened and deepened to allow boating, and a boathouse was built on the riverbank. In the center is a semicircular pavilion designed by Lockwood and Mawson in 1870. In 1891 Sir James Roberts bought the park. In 1903 a bronze statue of Sir Titus Salt was placed near the main promenade. In 1920 the park was given to Bradford Council and renamed Roberts Park in memory of Bertram Foster Roberts. The Saltaire Bridge linking the village and park collapsed in 1967; an iron footbridge later reconnected them. In 1971 Saltaire and Roberts Park were designated a conservation area, and in 2001 the area was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park was refurbished in 2009–2010 with lottery money and other grants.
Today the park has two main entrances: east via the lodge and southeast via a cast-iron bridge. A long east–west promenade runs through the middle, with shelters at each end. North of the promenade are winding paths and flower beds; south are a cricket ground and an open playing field. In the center, under the promenade, is the Lockwood and Mawson tea room pavilion, which houses the Half Moon Café (with Wi‑Fi and toilets). Next to the cafe is the bronze statue of Sir Titus Salt. North of the statue was the original bandstand, which was rebuilt after refurbishment. The North Shelter nearby shows a history poster exhibition. The park reopened on 22 May 2010 with a bandstand concert by the Hammonds Saltaire Band.
To the east is the Park Lodge and the main gates. The pavilion, park lodge and all three shelters are listed buildings, designed by Lockwood and Mawson. The refurbishment included new park furniture and signage, the reinstatement of railings, and resurfaced 3,700 square meters of footpaths with resin-bound gravel. A children's play area and a 280 square meter BMX skate park were added in the east. The project cost £4.5 million, with £3.2 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, £1.2 million from Bradford Council, and £0.1 million from other sources. Work took place from February 2009 to April 2010.
Roberts Park is operated by City of Bradford Parks and Landscape Services and remains open year-round.
