Robert Ascroft
Robert Ascroft, JP, MP (1847–19 June 1899) was a Lancashire solicitor and Conservative politician. He became one of Oldham's two Members of Parliament on 13 July 1895 and served until his death in 1899. Known as the "Workers' Friend," a statue of him was erected in Alexandra Park, Oldham thanks to a public subscription. He is mentioned by Winston Churchill in My Early Life, where Churchill recalls discussing the Oldham seat with him.
