Rang Rasiya
Rang Rasiya, also known as Colours of Passion in English, is a 2014 Indian drama film directed by Ketan Mehta. It tells the life of 19th‑century painter Raja Ravi Varma and is based on the biographical novel Raja Ravi Varma by Ranjit Desai. The film is released in Hindi as Rang Rasiya and in English as Colours of Passion, featuring Randeep Hooda as Raja Ravi Varma and Nandana Sen as his muse Sugandha.
Mehta, who had long wanted to make a film about Varma, adapted Desai’s novel with Deepa Sahi and Aanand Mahendroo producing. The project was first shown at The Times BFI London Film Festival in 2008 under the title Colours of Passion and later released in India on 7 November 2014. The movie was produced by Maya Movies, Infinity Filmed Entertainment, and Pen Studios.
Hooda plays Varma in two ages—young and older—and learned basic painting as part of his preparation. Paresh Rawal has an important supporting role. Triptha Parashar was cast as a princess without auditions, and Feryna Wazheir portrays a Pars i girl. The film’s wardrobe was designed by Niharika Khan, with Sangita Kathiwada as creative consultant. The music is by Sandesh Shandilya and the lyrics by Manoj Muntashir.
Rang Rasiya had a budget of about ₹12 crore and grossed around ₹4.8 crore in India. The film also faced censorship scrutiny from the Central Board of Film Certification over a scene deemed nudity, which contributed to delays in its release.
