Ramón de la Cruz
Ramón de la Cruz (1731–1794) was a Spanish playwright. He was born in Madrid and worked as a clerk in the finance ministry. He wrote about 400 sainetes—short, funny sketches of city life that were staged between acts of a longer play. He collected many of them in ten volumes (Madrid, 1786–1791). The best pieces, such as Las Tertulias de Madrid, show witty, satirical observations of late 18th‑century Madrid and its different social groups.
