Radio LaB 97.1FM
Radio LaB 97.1FM is a student‑run radio station at the University of Bedfordshire’s Luton campus. It stands for Radio Luton and Bedfordshire and began in May 1997 as Luton FM, created by Janey Gordon. The station used to broadcast on 87.9FM for a May-only event from Farley Hill, with studios on the Luton campus.
In 2008 it relaunched as LaB Radio (Luton and Bedfordshire), becoming Radio LaB in 2009. In 2010 Ofcom granted a full-time community licence, and since then it has broadcast 24/7 on 97.1FM across Luton and Bedfordshire and online. The studio moved to the Student Centre in 2011. Ofcom extended the FM licence to 2020 and again to 2025. In 2023 the station applied for a small-scale DAB licence and was awarded it in June 2024. Final-year students manage the station, with Radio LaB Coordinator Terry Lee as the licensee. Radio LaB has won Community Radio Awards in 2017, 2019 and twice in 2020.
