Répertoire international de la presse musicale
Répertoire international de la presse musicale (RIPM)
What it is
- RIPM provides access to music periodical literature published from 1750 to 1966. It offers an annotated index (RIPM Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals) and two full‑text publication series: RIPM Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals with Full Text and RIPM Preservation Series. It also includes full‑text jazz periodicals (RIPM Jazz Periodicals) covering roughly 1914–2000s.
Organization and purpose
- Founded in 1980 by H. Robert Cohen with colleagues Marcello Conati, Elvidio Surian, and Christoph-Helmut Mahling.
- It is one of four RIPM projects created by the International Musicological Society (IMS) and the International Association of Music Libraries (IAML). The goals were to address the limited availability and difficult access to music journals and to make their content easier to use.
- RIPM relies on a global network of scholars, librarians, and archivists and maintains an editorial center in Baltimore, Maryland. It partners with libraries in the United States and Europe to assemble complete journal runs, often representing the only surviving copies.
RIPM and RILM Collaboration
- RIPM works together with RILM to provide access to about 250 years of music periodical literature, with each project complementing the other chronologically.
