Puerto Suárez
Puerto Suárez is an inland river port and municipality in eastern Bolivia, in the Santa Cruz Department. It sits about 10 kilometers from the Brazilian border and lies on Laguna Cáceres, connected to the Paraguay and Paraná rivers through the Tamengo Canal. The town hosts a Bolivian Navy flotilla. It is the easternmost town in Bolivia and is closer to Brasília than to La Paz. Major roads, rail links, and an airport connect Puerto Suárez west to Santa Cruz and east to Brazil. In 2013 there was a proposal to build a railway link to Ilo in Peru. The town has Puerto Suárez International Airport, which offers some commercial flights. It was founded on November 10, 1875 by Miguel Suárez Arana. Population was about 11,600 in 2001, around 12,500 in 2007, with some estimates ranging up to 20,000–22,000.
