Portrait of the Duke of Argyll
Portrait of the Duke of Argyll is a portrait painting by the Scottish artist William Aikman, made around 1720. It shows John Campbell, the Duke of Argyll, a British general and politician who was active during the reigns of Queen Anne and George I. Argyll fought in the War of the Spanish Succession and led pro-Hanoverian forces during the Jacobite Rising of 1715. He was also one of the Scottish commissioners for the 1707 Act of Union.
Aikman supported Argyll when he arrived in London, and the Duke helped the artist gain a reputation by painting him and other Campbells. The painting stayed with the Dukes of Argyll at Hamilton Palace until 1882, and has been in the National Portrait Gallery in London since 1885. The work measures 125.7 cm by 101 cm and is oil on canvas.
