Poornachandran
G. Poornachandran, born in 1949 in Arcot, Tamil Nadu, is an Indian Tamil writer, critic, translator, and professor. He taught Tamil at Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirappalli, and later served as an emeritus professor at Pondicherry University. He currently lives in Chennai.
He has written 11 books, mainly on literary criticism and Western theories, and translated 37 works from English into Tamil. He has also published 4 books and contributed essays to magazines such as Kalachuvadu, Nigazh, and Tamil Neyam.
Poornachandran won the Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize in 2016 for translating Manu Joseph’s Serious Men into Tamil as Poruppumikka Manidargal. He also received the Anantha Vikatan Award for translation in 2011 and 2016, and the Ilakkiya Mamani Award in 2022 from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
He helped start cultural activities in Tiruchirappalli, conducting Badal Sircar Theatrical Workshops in 1989 and influencing local cine-forums and reader forums, fostering interest in art films and serious reading among students.
Today he continues to write essays on his website poornachandran.com and runs an endowment that funds regular workshops on literature and criticism.
