Diocese of Bluefields
The Diocese of Bluefields (Latin: Dioecesis Bluefieldensis) is a Catholic territory in Nicaragua. It is part of the Latin Church and follows the Roman Rite. It belongs to the Ecclesiastical Province of Managua, under Metropolitan Archbishop Leopoldo José Brenes Solórzano. The cathedral is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary in Bluefields.
Area and people: It covers about 19,964 square kilometers. In 2017, about 457,565 people lived there, with 260,838 Catholics (57%). The diocese has 10 parishes.
History: It began as the Vicariate Apostolic of Bluefields on 2 December 1913. By 2017 it served around 587,000 Catholics. On 30 November 2017 the vicariate was raised to the Diocese of Bluefields, and the Diocese of Siuna was created, taking about 60% of the Catholics from Bluefields.
Current leadership: The bishop is Francisco José Tigerino Dávila, with Pablo Ervin Schmitz Simon, OFMCap, as bishop emeritus.
