Polymastia lorum
Polymastia lorum is a species of sea sponge in the family Polymastiidae. It belongs to the animal kingdom, sponges (Porifera), class Demospongiae, order Polymastiida, genus Polymastia. The species was described by Kelly-Borges and Bergquist in 1997.
This sponge is known from only one specimen found attached to a dead Glycimeris shell on a reef near Ohinau Island, in the Mercury Islands off North Island, New Zealand. It is small and crust-like, about 4 cm across, with a yellow outer surface and an orange-red interior. Its most striking feature is very long strap-like papillae, up to 6 cm long.
