Polygenis gwyni is a flea. It mainly infects the hispid cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus) in the southern United States, but it also lives on other animals that are commonly found with cotton rats. In South Carolina, hosts recorded include the cotton rat, the Florida woodrat (Neotoma floridana), the cotton mouse (Peromyscus gossypinus), the marsh rice rat (Oryzomys palustris), and the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus).
