Sultanpur district

Sultanpur district is in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in northern India, part of the Awadh region and the Ayodhya division. The district headquarters is in Sultanpur city.

Geography and people
The district covers 2,672.89 square kilometers. In 2011, about 2.25 million people lived there, with around 147,000 living in towns. The population density is roughly 841 people per square kilometer. About 21% of the population belongs to Scheduled Castes.

Languages
Hindi is the official language, with Urdu also officially recognized. The people mainly speak Awadhi, a dialect of Hindi.

Administration
Sultanpur district today has five tehsils: Sultanpur Sadar, Kadipur, Lambhua, Baldirai, and Jaisinghpur. After Amethi district was created in 2010, the tehsils of Amethi, Musafirka n a, and Gauriganj became part of Amethi district, leaving the five Sultanpur tehsils in Sultanpur district.

Government and towns
The district has one city municipality (Sultanpur city) and four town areas: Lambhua, Dostpur, Kadipur, and Koiripur. There are about 14 development blocks and 19 police stations. The district contains about 1,727 villages.
