Play Their Hearts Out
Play Their Hearts Out is a 2010 non-fiction book by George Dohrmann that uncovers the hidden side of grassroots youth basketball in the AAU. It follows coach Joe Keller and his top recruit, Demetrius Walker, as Keller builds a powerful West Coast team that becomes known as Team Cal. Keller devotes himself to Walker, rigs practices to spotlight him, and pushes aside other players while chasing big money from Adidas through Jr. Phenom camps and other deals.
As Walker rises, Keller’s coaching flaws and manipulation become clear. The team wins big, including a 2004 national title, but Keller’s methods alienate players and fuel a culture of pressure and profit over development. Walker grows unprepared for high school basketball, lacking fundamental skills and sometimes faking injuries to avoid competition. After Keller withdraws from the scene, Walker finds new coaches and a rocky path through recruiting, transferring schools and briefly considering USC before changing course. In the end, eighteen Keller-era players earn Division I scholarships, including Walker, who moves through several colleges. The book has drawn praise for its clear writing and detailed, provocative revelations about how adults can exploit young athletes for money and fame.
