Peter Smith (Canadian politician)
Peter Smith (May 26, 1877 – May 21, 1934) was a Canadian politician from Stratford, Ontario. He represented Perth South in the Ontario Legislature from 1919 to 1923 as a member of the United Farmers of Ontario. He served as Ontario’s provincial treasurer during that time, a role he held during the Ontario Bond Scandal. After the UFO government fell, he was tried for his part in the scandal. On October 24, 1924, he was found guilty of conspiracy to defraud the government and was sentenced to three years in prison. He and Aemilius Jarvis were fined a total of $600,000; Jarvis received six months in prison on the same conviction. Smith took the Perth South seat from John Bennewies and was succeeded by McCausland Irvine. He died in Stratford in 1934 at the age of 56.
