Peter A. Blake
Peter Alan Blake (born April 6, 1957, in Cincinnati, Ohio) is an American public administrator who has led Virginia’s higher education efforts. He earned a BA and MS from Virginia Commonwealth University.
In 2002, Governor Mark Warner appointed him Deputy Secretary of Education for Virginia. He became the 12th Virginia Secretary of Education in July 2005, serving until January 2006 after Belle Wheelan’s resignation.
Blake later joined the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). He served as interim director starting April 1, 2011, and was named Director in 2012, a role he held until January 1, 2024. During his SCHEV tenure, he worked under governors Bob McDonnell, Terry McAuliffe, Ralph Northam, and Glenn Youngkin.
He is married to Mary Blanchard.
