Nero Burning ROM
Nero Burning ROM, usually called Nero, is a Windows-only disc burning program from Nero AG. It’s part of the Nero Multimedia Suite but can also be bought as a standalone product. It’s used to burn and copy CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs, and it can print labels using LightScribe or LabelFlash. The software can also convert audio files into other formats.
Nero Burning ROM supports creating and burning disc images. It uses ISO9660 and Nero’s own NRG format and can burn standard ISO images as well. For formats it doesn’t natively support, you can install plug-ins and codecs. Newer versions add features like Nero MediaBrowser for adding media to compilations, and Nero AirBurn lets you burn media directly from mobile devices.
The program has a logo of a burning Colosseum and a name pun referring to the Roman emperor Nero. There was a Linux-compatible version from 2005 to 2012, but it was discontinued. The latest release labeled Nero Burning ROM 2017 came out in October 2016 and includes SecurDisc 4.0 with 256-bit encryption.
Nero Burning ROM is available as part of the Nero Essentials bundle that ships with some OEM computers and optical disc writers, and it’s also sold as a standalone product. While Nero no longer maintains a full version history on its site, release notes are archived by third-party sources.
