Personal Capital
Personal Capital is an online financial advisor and wealth manager based in Redwood Shores, California, with offices in San Francisco, Denver, Dallas and Atlanta. It was founded in 2009 by Bill Harris, Rob Foregger, Louie Gasparini and Paul Bergholm (originally SafeCorp Financial Corp), rebranded to Personal Capital in 2010 and publicly launched in 2011. Since 2012 it has been registered with the SEC as an investment adviser. In 2020 Empower Retirement bought Personal Capital for about $825 million, and in 2023 they renamed Personal Capital and its products to Empower.
The company offers both free and paid services. Free users get a digital overview of their finances and access to analytics and planning tools by linking bank accounts, brokers, 401(k)s, mortgages, credit cards and loans. The web and mobile apps provide tools such as a 401(k) fee analyzer, retirement planner, mutual fund analyzer, investment checkup and cash flow tool. For clients with at least $100,000 in assets, a managed-accounts option provides a team of financial advisors for a fee. Personal Capital uses Yodlee to securely store user credentials. Its assets under management are $21.9 billion. It serves the United States and has about 1,193 employees. Its parent is Empower Retirement, and its president is Jay Shah.
