Knowsley, Victoria
Knowsley is a small locality in the City of Greater Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. It is about 134 km north of Melbourne, 31 km east of Bendigo, and 15 km northwest of Heathcote. The area uses postcodes 3523 and 3551, and 168 people lived there at the 2021 census.
Knowsley began in 1876 with the Moorabbee Hotel, and a school opened in 1879. Timber cutting was an early main job, supplying Bendigo. In 1888 a railway station on the Bendigo–Heathcote line opened, but it closed in 1958. After the forests were cleared, farming and grazing became the main activities. By 1933 it was a small farming town with a school, church, recreation hall, and hotel, around 150 people. The population declined over time; the school had seven students in 1981 and it closed in 1991.
