The eighth-generation Honda Civic is a compact car Honda built from 2005 to 2012 (China continued with related versions until 2016). It replaced the previous generation and was offered in four body styles: sedan, coupe, and both three-door and five-door hatchbacks. Markets varied: in Canada some models were sold as the Acura CSX, and in China the car appeared as the Ciimo 1.8; the European hatchback had its own distinct design and engineering.

Design and features: The Civic introduced a redesigned cockpit with a two-tier dashboard that included a digital speedometer. It also brought improved suspension, a longer wheelbase for more interior space and stability, and four-wheel anti-lock braking as a standard feature in many trims.

Engines and transmissions: A range of gasoline engines was available, from about 1.4 to 2.0 liters, depending on the market. A hybrid version (IMA) used a 1.3-liter engine plus electric motor. Transmission choices included 5- and 6-speed manuals, 5- and 6-speed automatics, and a CVT for hybrids. Europe also offered a 2.2-liter diesel in some versions.

Notable variants: The sporty Civic Si arrived in North America in 2007 for sedans and coupes. Europe got its own Type R variants starting in 2007. A limited-edition Civic Mugen Si sedan appeared in 2008. The Civic Hybrid offered strong city fuel economy, but there were battery reliability concerns and related lawsuits; Honda later extended the hybrid battery warranty.

Hatchback and market differences: The European hatchbacks used a different rear suspension (torsion beam) and featured styling and interior options like two-tone dashboards and flexible rear seats (the “magic seats” in some versions). In North America and many Asian markets, the sedan remained a popular choice.

Production notes: In North America, Civics were built in Greensburg, Indiana, and Alliston, Ontario. European hatchbacks were produced in the UK (Swindon), while China’s version was made by Dongfeng Honda in Wuhan and later relaunched as Ciimo 1.8.
