Penrhos, Herefordshire

Penrhos lies east of Kington in Herefordshire, near the Welsh border. It has a few buildings, including Penrhos Farm and Penrhos Court.

The name comes from Welsh words pen (head/top) and rhos (moor).

Penrhos Court began in the late 13th century with a large cruck dwelling. Over time more buildings were added, and it became a small hamlet of about six cottages. Farm buildings form a square around a courtyard, with a pond and a well in the middle.

Historically, the area has been called Penrose (1752), Penrhose (1841), then Penrose again (1850) for a 213-acre farm. In 1880 the Welsh name Penrhos started to be used.

Penrhos Court has hosted several famous visitors, including Queen, Led Zeppelin, Mike Oldfield, and Terry Jones of Monty Python. In August 1975, the Queen stayed there for a couple of weeks to rehearse for the album A Night at the Opera before the band moved on to Rockfield Studios in Monmouth. The album features songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody and You’re My Best Friend.
