Penaten
Penaten is a German brand best known for Penaten Cream, a baby barrier cream. It was created in 1904 by chemist Max Riese (with Otto Schmithausen) in Honnef, Germany. The cream, mainly zinc oxide and lanolin with a light lemon scent, was named Penaten by Riese’s wife Elizabeth after the Penates, the Roman household gods.
A factory was built in 1908 in Rhöndorf. It was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt by Riese’s sons. In 1986, Penaten became part of Johnson & Johnson. In 2000, production of the cream moved to Italy and France. Today, the Penaten brand is owned by Kenvue. Johnson & Johnson still sells a petroleum jelly product under the Penaten name, but it’s a different product from the original cream.
