Peanut Island
Peanut Island is a 79-acre island at the mouth of the Lake Worth Inlet in Palm Beach County, Florida. It was created by dredging in 1918, which also formed the inlet and the Port of Palm Beach. Originally called Inlet Island, it was renamed Peanut Island after a planned peanut oil‑shipping operation failed in 1946. In 2005, a $13‑million renovation turned it into Peanut Island Park, with campsites, a pier, a man-made reef, walking paths around the island, gardens, and picnic areas. The island is also known for a secret bunker built for President John F. Kennedy soon after his 1960 election; Kennedy often spent winters in nearby Palm Beach. The shelter, Detachment Hotel, was open for tours for several years but closed in October 2017.
